A Tribute to the CREW Behind the Machines

$45.00

This inspirational tribute of appreciation to his “CREW” by P-40 Burma Banshee pilot Capt. Owen Allred, was entered into the Library Hall of Congress on November 27, 1944. “Capt.Allred is the first to insist that his ground crew share in whatever glory may come his way. Without their expert help in loading bombs and ammunition, and in servicing his plane, he couldn’t have done the job he did.” In the painting Allred’s mechanic Walter Contreras is standing in front of the aircraft.
Tragically, Allred’s plane crashed into Long Island Sound on a training flight just after midnight on August 24, 1947. Some piece of wreckage is down there, 36 feet below the surface of Long Island Sound, but could it be the wreck of Maj. Owen Allred's plane?
Bob Contreras, who is the son of Allred’s mechanic Walter (standing in front of the Burma Banshee in painting) has spent hundreds of hours scanning the waters of Long Island Sound with sonar devices from his 45-foot Formula boat on a quest to find the wreckage of Allred’s downed aircraft.
