This painting has a remarkable story. We met Tuskagee Airman Calvin Spann and his lovely wife Gwenelle through a mutual doctor who is treating Roy and Calvin for prostate cancer. Dr. Allen knew that Roy was an aviation artist and brought us together. Roy painted Calvin’s combat in “Noble Wingman.” On Calvin’s 90th birthday, we had a celebration at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, Tx., and we presented Calvin and Gwenelle with the original painting as a special birthday present.
Tuskagee Airman 2nd Lt. Calvin Spann, flying a P-51 Mustang, participated in the longest bomber escort mission in WW2 from Ramitelli, Italy to Berlin, Germany on March 24, 1945. 2nd Lt. Spann was the wingman protecting his squadron leader, as he shot down a Me-262. Spann was part of the 332nd Fighter Group, and the l00th Fighter Squadron.
